Rock Center Xmas Tree Getting Older, but Greener than Ever

An old-rooted tradition is sprouting new buds. On its 75th anniversary, the 84-foot tall, 2007 Christmas tree in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza is truly ‘greener’ than ever. For the first time, this year the tree will feature 30,000 multicolored LED bulbs over 5 miles of wire. Using energy-efficient LEDs in place of incandescent bulbs will reduce the spectacular display's electricity consumption by 63%, a fraction of years past. This year’s tree was cut with a 2-person hand saw, resulting in a virtually carbon-neutral event. Even after the holidays, the tree will continue to give back by being recycled into lumber used for Habitat for Humanity houses. Rockefeller Center’s owner, Tishman Speyer, installed the largest privately owned solar energy generation station in Manhattan through 363 solar panels on top of 45 Rockefeller Center. Additionally, Radio City Music Hall is getting a ‘green’ roof to capture water and reduce gases as well as a new ice chiller that will improve cooling and reduce energy consumption, helping make the Rockefeller Center complex greener year-round.
