Why Build Green?

According to a study done by Worldwatch Institute in the U.S., “buildings account for one-sixth of the world’s fresh water withdrawals, one-quarter of its wood harvest and two-fifths of its material and energy flows”. Building green counteracts these forces and allows this planet to save resources by using them efficiently and economically, while creating structures that minimize the impact of the construction process on the environment and the corresponding carbon footprint. If designed properly, green buildings minimize capital costs by efficient design planning; decrease operating and maintenance costs associated with inefficient system operation; and reduce utility costs associated with electrical, gas, steam and water usage. For local communities green buildings reduce demands on the local infrastructure such as water, sanitary and electrical systems in the region which in turn helps sustain the regional environment and economy by freeing resource capacity to be used elsewhere. |
